2010 Attendees, welcome!

2010 looks like our biggest ever! As of the end of May, we had a few rooms left but we have significantly more families and more attendees than ever before -- more opportunities for making new friends and finding people with similar interests.

First timers: If you have not heard from your "buddy family", please let Wendy know. We want your welcome to start now.

Please review the PG Retreat Statement of Expectations and our behavior policy. They are a basis for insuring that everyone attending the PG Retreat has a rewarding experience. These two documents are provided to insure that every attendee is aware of their responsibilities as members of the PG Retreat community.

A tentative schedule and list of programs is up on the "Programs" page.

This year, for the first time, we have homework! “Mary Shelley” has asked us to read some version of Frankenstein before we arrive. A list of suggested versions – including a number for children is in our Yahoo! Group.

For those families who are arriving early or staying late in Colorado, it's not too early to post on our Yahoo! group if you would like to meet up with other families for some sight seeing or other activities before or after the Retreat. Pikes Peak is always a big draw as is the Garden of the Gods.

You can also help support PG Retreat by shopping through our Sponsors page!  We'll earn a percentage each time you purchase through one of our affiliate programs. Thank you.

PACKING RECOMMENDATIONS

The following are some recommendations from Tim regarding what to bring and not to bring to PG Retreat.

Clothing:

  • Be sure to bring a pair of sturdy walking shoes, as there will be a lot of walking between the various buildings on the Glen Eyrie campus.
  • Pack a jacket or sweatshirt; it can tend to chill off at night.
  • If you plan to go on a hike, include an old pair of tennis shoes that you don’t mind getting wet; better yet would be a pair of water shoes, preferably closed-toed due to the number of rocks. Good traction is helpful. If you plan to go on the longer hike, for example up to the Punch Bowls, you should consider wearing a swim suit or fast drying shorts. Even if you don’t intend to go for a swim, you may find yourself doing so anyway, depending upon how good your aforementioned traction is. A fanny pack or small day pack would also not be a bad idea for any longer hike, as there are sections where it is helpful to have your hands free.

Medical:

  • Definitely bring lots of sunscreen.
  • The bugs aren’t bad, but you may want to bring insect repellent, just in case.
  • Likewise, you may want to pack some Benadryl or other similar medication.
  • Glen Eyrie has emergency medical supplies, but you might want to pack some bandages and related supplies given the opportunities for cuts and scrapes while running around outside.
  • Ear plugs are recommended if anyone in the family is highly sensitive to noisy rooms.

Food & Drink:

  • As a reminder, Glen Eyrie does not allow guests to bring food onto the property for consumption by others. You are welcome to bring in food for personal consumption. Each lodge contains a kitchen with a refrigerator and microwave.
  • The food will be plentiful, but note that you can also obtain snacks and drinks at the bookstore, located in the Carriage House.
  • Please observe Glen Eyrie’s policy prohibiting alcohol on the property.
  • Please observe Glen Eyrie’s policy prohibiting smoking inside buildings.
  • Remember to hydrate on your way to PG Retreat, especially if you are coming from out of state. We’ve arranged for a daily drop of water bottles at Big Horn and The Oaks, and there will be water available in sessions and at breaks. Still, you are encouraged to bring your own refillable water bottle, given the amount of walking you’ll be doing, particularly if you join one of the hikes.

Electronics:

  • Cell-phone coverage at Glen Eyrie is spotty. They are in the process of installing signal booster equipment, but it isn’t safe to assume it will be launched by the time of the retreat. There are land lines in the rooms. You might consider bringing a pair of walkie talkies.
  • Wi-fi is available throughout the Glen Eyrie campus, so you will be able to access the Internet. Be aware that most of the group spaces at the retreat will be considered electronics-free areas. Some exceptions may be made in the Digital Media Zone, a room in which DDR will e set up, but urges to play general video games will have to be taken to one’s guest room.
  • There are no televisions in the guest rooms. So, again, if a child (or parent) cannot go without their fix, it would be advisable to bring a laptop and DVDs for watching in one’s room. Time permitting, and assuming agreement, acceptable DVDs may be allowed in the Digital Media Zone.
  • A camera and a pair of binoculars are definitely recommended.
  • Flashlights or headlamps are highly recommended. The main pathways at Glen Eyrie are lit at night, but not the primary short cut between the lodging buildings where we’ll be staying. Also, lighting will be required for those wishing to go on the nighttime 4th of July hike to a fireworks viewing vantage point.

Fun & Games:

  • Don’t forget to bring your musical instruments or other items needed for the talent show.
  • If you plan to drive to view fireworks, you may want to bring lawn chairs.
  • Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh games tend to spring up, so bring your cards if you have them.
  • Feel free to bring board games to share or, ideally, to donate to the PG Retreat collection.
